Amazon’s generative-AI assistant is going global. Alexa+ is now available in India through Early Access at no cost for eligible customers, bringing conversational AI to Echo speakers, smart displays, Fire TV devices, and the Alexa mobile app — with support for English, Hindi, and Hinglish, and features tuned specifically for Indian households.
Alexa+ India launch: key facts
- Early Access rollout began August 6, 2026
- Free for eligible Echo speakers, smart displays, Fire TV devices, and Alexa app users
- Supports English, Hindi, and Hinglish with natural language switching
- Built on Amazon Bedrock, routing across more than 70 large language models
- India-specific integrations: EazyDiner, Swiggy, MakeMyTrip, and more coming soon
Designed for how India speaks
The standout feature of the India launch is language. Alexa+ lets users switch between English, Hindi, and Hinglish naturally mid-conversation, without repeating the wake word after every request. Amazon has also tuned the assistant for Indian expressions — understanding phrases like “dhai baje” and “ek paav” — along with Indian relationship terms and the code-switching that characterizes everyday Hinglish conversation.
The technology was developed with Amazon teams in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai, covering speech recognition and language models designed specifically for Indian homes rather than adapted from a US-centric model.
What it can do
Beyond answering questions, Alexa+ in India handles smart home controls, meal planning, shopping, music discovery, and entertainment. It works with services including Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, JioSaavn, Prime Video, and Netflix. Local service integrations with EazyDiner, Swiggy, District by Zomato, MakeMyTrip, Home Triangle, and TripAdvisor are on the way.
For shopping, Alexa+ can browse and compare products, place orders, send price-drop alerts, track deliveries, and summarize verified reviews. It can also schedule calendar events while emailing contacts about clashes, and recognize individual household members through Voice ID and Visual ID to tailor recommendations and remember preferences such as dietary restrictions.
Smart home support
Smart home compatibility covers Indian brands including Atomberg, Qubo, Dreame, and Wipro, alongside the usual global ecosystem. Users can create voice-controlled routines, manage multiple connected devices together, and control them through natural conversation rather than rigid commands.
Privacy controls include the Alexa Privacy dashboard, interaction history management, recording retention settings, and physical microphone and camera controls on devices.
Background: Alexa+ goes international
The India launch follows Alexa+’s broad US rollout in February 2026, where Prime members received unlimited access at no extra cost. India is one of the first major international markets for the assistant, and the localization effort — four Indian development centers, native Hinglish support, local service integrations — signals how seriously Amazon is taking the market.
It also sets up a direct contest with Google’s Gemini for Home, which has been expanding its own early access across countries through 2026. The multilingual, multi-accent challenge of the Indian market makes it a proving ground for both assistants’ conversational claims.
Outlook
Free Early Access removes the biggest barrier to trying Alexa+ in India, and the Hindi/Hinglish support addresses the reason many Indian households never warmed to the first generation of English-first voice assistants. If the local integrations land as promised and the conversational experience holds up in real homes, Alexa+ could become the default smart home interface for a market where voice was always the most natural input — it just needed to speak the language.
