GE Lighting is expanding its smart shades lineup with made-to-order sizing, new fabric options, and more flexible installation — a push that puts custom-looking automated window coverings within easier reach of mainstream smart home owners. The expanded range keeps the lineup’s signature selling points intact: Matter over Thread connectivity and a rechargeable battery that GE Lighting says lasts up to six months on a single charge.
What’s new: made-to-order sizing and more fabrics
Until now, GE’s smart shades were sold in a selection of standard sizes, which meant windows outside those dimensions were out of luck. The shades can now be ordered to fit individual windows, with widths from 28 to 72 inches (71–183 cm) and heights from 35 to 110 inches (89–279 cm). That’s a meaningful jump — it covers everything from narrow bathroom windows to wide sliding doors and tall picture windows that standard shades simply can’t handle.
Alongside the expanded sizing, GE Lighting has broadened its fabric catalog. The existing Blackout and Translucent materials are now joined by a 3% solar fabric, plus a collection of designer Light Filtering and Blackout fabrics. The options map to real use cases: solar fabrics cut glare in sun-heavy rooms while preserving some visibility through the window; light-filtering materials soften daylight without fully darkening a room; and blackout remains the pick for bedrooms and home cinema setups. Each fabric can be paired with an aluminium housing in black or white, so the shades can either blend into their surroundings or provide a contrasting finish.
More flexible installation
GE Lighting has also introduced a reverse-roll option that addresses a common frustration with window coverings installed near handles or other protruding hardware. With the standard roll, the fabric descends close to the windowpane; the reverse-roll configuration lets the fabric descend further away from the glass, providing extra clearance for window handles and similar obstructions. Both configurations support inside- or outside-the-opening mounting, and GE Lighting says installation remains DIY-friendly at under ten minutes — no drilling into electrical boxes or running cables required.
Matter over Thread and six-month battery life
Connectivity is unchanged and remains one of the range’s strongest points: the shades support Matter over Thread, so they work across Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa without being tied to a single manufacturer’s platform. Thread’s low-power mesh networking lets the shades communicate through a Thread border router rather than holding individual Wi-Fi connections, which matters for battery-powered devices. Once added to a platform, the shades can join routines and automations — opening in the morning, closing in the evening, or operating alongside smart lighting and other connected devices. For Apple Home users in particular, Matter compatibility means the shades slot into scenes and automations alongside existing HomeKit and Matter accessories.
Power comes from a rechargeable battery with a claimed six-month runtime per charge, eliminating the need for permanent electrical wiring — a major plus in existing homes where routing power to windows is impractical. Actual battery life will vary with how often the shades are operated, but six months between charges removes one of the biggest friction points that used to hold battery shades back.
Price and availability
The new made-to-order GE smart shades start at US$299.99 and are sold exclusively through GE Lighting’s online store and its Amazon storefront. Other retailers will continue to carry the existing pre-sized models, so shoppers wanting custom dimensions and the expanded fabric selection will need to buy through the two designated online channels.
One practical note for buyers: made-to-order means measurements matter more than ever. Double-check width and height, and decide upfront between inside- and outside-mount based on how deep your window frames are — that choice determines the mounting hardware and how cleanly the housing sits. You’ll also want to confirm you have a Thread border router on the network before the shades arrive, since Thread accessories can’t join a home through Wi-Fi alone.
Why this matters
Automated shading is one of the smart home’s most satisfying upgrades — but also one of the most expensive, with custom solutions from specialist brands routinely running well past $500 per window. GE Lighting’s $299.99 entry point, combined with made-to-order sizing, narrows the gap between off-the-shelf and custom without demanding a full retrofit. The choice of Matter over Thread also signals where the category is heading: battery-powered, standard-based devices that install without an electrician and join whatever ecosystem the household already uses.
There are still trade-offs. The advanced features live or die with the wider platform — deep scheduling and effects-style customizations available in vendor-specific apps don’t always translate through Matter — and the rechargeable battery, while convenient, means adding another charging routine to household life. But as Thread border routers become more common in homes (they’re already baked into most Apple TV and HomePod models, many Echo devices, and recent Google TV hardware), the connectivity side of the equation keeps getting easier. GE Lighting’s expanded range is a solid, sensibly priced option for anyone whose smart home upgrade list has always had “automated shades” somewhere on it.
