SwitchBot has announced Permanent Outdoor Lights, a 30-meter smart lighting system designed to stay mounted on a home’s exterior year-round. Announced via PR Newswire on October 20, 2026, the system combines RGBIC color effects with dedicated warm- and cool-white lighting, and ships with native Matter-over-Wi-Fi support — so it connects to Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant, and SmartThings without a separate SwitchBot hub. It is available now at an MSRP of USD 239.99 (CAD 299.99).
The launch lands just ahead of the holiday decorating season, when homeowners traditionally climb ladders to hang — and later remove — seasonal light strings. SwitchBot’s pitch is to make that annual ritual optional: one permanently installed system that handles both festive color displays and everyday white illumination.
Color and white light in one strip
Permanent Outdoor Lights use a 3-in-1 RGBIC+WW design that combines RGB color, warm-white light, and cool-white light in each LED. The 30-meter system carries 72 LEDs across six 5-meter segments, with integrated IC control that lets multiple colors appear across the installation at the same time.
The system supports 16 million colors and can render gradients, flowing effects, chasing patterns, and multi-color arrangements — aimed at Christmas, Halloween, game days, parties, and other events where a colorful exterior display makes sense.
For daily use, dedicated warm- and cool-white LEDs provide more natural functional illumination than white light produced by RGB color mixing. Each LED delivers up to 40 lumens, with total brightness reaching up to 2,600 lumens across the full 30 meters, based on SwitchBot laboratory testing. Color temperature adjusts from 2700K to 6500K, with smooth 1% to 100% dimming through the SwitchBot app — from bright cool-white lighting for visibility, to natural white for general outdoor use, to low warm-white for a softer route home at night.
Matter over Wi-Fi, no extra hub
With native Matter over Wi-Fi, the lights pair with compatible platforms without requiring an additional SwitchBot Hub. A Matter controller is still needed — such as an Apple HomePod mini — but beyond that, setup goes straight into the platform of choice.
Supported ecosystems include Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant, SmartThings, and other Matter-compatible platforms, enabling voice control, remote operation, and cross-brand automations. In Apple Home, users can turn the lights on or off, adjust supported lighting settings, and include them in scenes alongside other compatible devices. The lights can also join the broader SwitchBot ecosystem to coordinate outdoor lighting with other SwitchBot and Matter-compatible products for arrival, evening, entertainment, and seasonal scenes.
Built to stay outside all year
Permanent outdoor lighting lives or dies on durability, and SwitchBot has specified the system accordingly. The light strings carry an IP67 dust- and water-resistance rating, while the controller and power adapter are rated IP65. A UV-resistant enclosure protects against fading and material degradation during long-term outdoor exposure.
The operating temperature range spans -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C), covering winter cold and summer heat, and the LEDs are rated for up to 55,000 hours — a lifespan that matters when the lights are mounted on eaves and rooflines you would rather not climb twice a year.
Installation is designed to flex around different rooflines. The six 5-meter segments can be routed around architectural features, and included extension cables help bridge gaps between sections, supporting installations extending up to 36 meters. The lights can be secured with 3M adhesive tape on smooth surfaces such as finished wood and metal, or with screws for rougher surfaces like concrete, railings, and brick. SwitchBot suggests placements beneath eaves, above garage doors, under balconies, around garden structures, and along covered outdoor walkways.
Everyday control options
Users can control the lights through the SwitchBot app, supported voice assistants, or the included wired controller. The wired controller provides physical switching and 10 levels of brightness adjustment — notably, basic operation keeps working even when Wi-Fi is unavailable, a useful fallback for outdoor gear.
In the app, users get color and white-light temperature controls, brightness, dynamic effects, scenes, schedules, and timers. Automatic schedules can switch the lights on in the evening and off later at night to reduce unnecessary energy use. A built-in microphone enables music-reactive lighting, letting colors and effects respond to surrounding audio during parties and gatherings. A SwitchBot Remote, sold separately, adds another physical control option for household members who prefer not to use an app.

Why it matters
Permanent outdoor lighting has become one of the more interesting battlegrounds in smart lighting: the category asks homeowners to pay more upfront in exchange for never hanging seasonal lights again. The dual-identity approach — festive color for holidays, natural white for the other 300-plus days — addresses the most common objection to permanent holiday-style lighting: that it sits idle most of the year. SwitchBot’s dedicated warm- and cool-white LEDs, rather than RGB-mixed white, directly targets that use case.
The Matter-over-Wi-Fi choice is also notable. Battery-powered smart home devices have increasingly moved to Matter-over-Thread for energy efficiency, but for mains-powered outdoor strings, Wi-Fi simplifies the network topology: no Thread border router is required, and pairing can go straight into any Matter ecosystem the household already uses.
One caveat worth noting: the headline 2,600-lumen figure comes from SwitchBot’s own laboratory testing and, per the company’s footnote, may vary by lighting mode and operating conditions. Real-world brightness — particularly in white mode — is something to verify in hands-on testing.
Outlook
The timing is clearly deliberate: launching on October 20 puts the lights on store shelves just as homeowners start planning Halloween and holiday displays, the category’s natural selling season. With native Matter support and a sub-$240 price for a 30-meter system, SwitchBot is positioning this as the accessible entry point to permanent outdoor lighting — competing less on maximum brightness and more on ecosystem openness and install-once convenience.
Whether that formula resonates will depend on real-world durability claims holding up through winter — the IP67 rating and wide temperature range are promises that only a full season of weather can validate. But for households that dread the annual ladder ritual, a permanently installed, Matter-native system at this price is an easy one to shortlist.
